Seven Mile conducts music, arts, and coding lessons for students in Detroit to provide an opportunity for creative expression. The lack of public funding prevents access to extracurricular education for many children. To help close the gap, Seven Mile holds weekly lessons during the school year taught by University of Michigan volunteers. During the summer, we host Brightmoor Arts Academy, a six-week program taught by professional music educators.
Seven Mile began as a music education program during the 2013-2014 school year. University of Michigan SMTD alum Sam Saunders founded Seven Mile in direct response to the harsh cuts to music and arts education funding in Detroit Public Schools. Based on a belief that every student should have access to music education, Seven Mile understands that the opportunity to creatively express oneself is essential for all children and has since expanded to teach art, creative writing, and coding.
