Our Arts program first began in 2015 and has been quickly expanding ever since. Lessons are taught by volunteer student teachers including Fine Arts majors in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan, English and Creative Writing majors and hobby designers and writers.
Lessons are split into two parts: art and creative writing. Art projects include both 2D and 3D mediums, from acrylic and watercolor painting to clay and fabric weaving. Creative writing teaches both prose and poetry, focusing on activities that are fun, engaging, and educational for students of all reading and writing skill levels.
Arts is taught weekly in the fall term (September to December) and winter term (January to April). At the end of each term, students display their art and writing assembled in a gallery for parents, family, and community members, showcasing the skills they learned throughout the semester.
