If you enjoy working with children or are passionate about supporting the Detroit community, Seven Mile is the perfect student org. There is no application or cut-off to join Seven Mile; any UMich student who plays an instrument, is interested in art or writing, or has basic computer science skills can teach with Music, Arts, or Coding. Seven Mile is great for making friends in a tight-knit community and offers many opportunities for student leadership.
How to join: Seven Mile is open to new members in September and January, at the beginning of fall and winter term. To join, attend a mass meeting to learn more or e-mail Seven Mile about your interest in joining Music, Arts, or Coding. After attending a teacher training session and completing a background check, you’ll be assigned to a teaching trip.

Our annual summer camp, Brightmoor Arts Academy (BAA), is a six-week, five-day-a-week program held in June and July. BAA is led by a team of professional music educators and teaching assistants. Lead instructors (LIs) are responsible for designing curriculum and leading instruction for the six-week camp. An LI should be a professional music educator with experience teaching in a classroom setting. Teaching Assistants (TAs) work with the LI to help plan curriculum and teach lessons. They may work with students in small groups, help with classroom management, or take turns leading activities with the LI. Experience with kids is preferred, but not required.
How to join: Seven Mile hires lead instructors and teaching assistants for BAA each year between January and April. All positions are paid. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
