Our Music program has reached hundreds of students across Detroit since it began in 2013, and the program continues to grow. Lessons are taught by volunteer student teachers who come from a variety of musical backgrounds. Our teachers include music majors in the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, members of the Michigan Marching Band and trained student musicians.
Students learn music foundations including rhythms, reading notes, and intonation. They practice individual and ensemble performance including an ensemble choir. Instruments students can learn include guitar, piano, violin, trumpet, trombone, cello, saxophone, recorder, drums, and more.
Music is taught weekly in the fall term (September to December) and winter term (January to April). At the end of each term, students perform in a final concert for parents, family, and community members, showcasing the skills they learned throughout the semester.
